Questions about
yoga in Portland?

Here is a guide
to practice styles:

Hatha Yoga
Well, this term actually refers to any of the styles employing the poses of the yoga tradition and not to a particular teaching method, pace or syllabus. All of our classes are hatha yoga in one form or another.

Ashtanga
A vigorous, flowing practice taught in a particular sequential order. Ashtanga is a challenging practice that gradually builds strength and flexibility over time.

Power Yoga
Flow Yoga
Vinyasa Yoga
These are all offshoots of the ashtanga system and whatever Portland yoga studio you go to will have their own idea of pacing and intensity. All are more improvisational than ashtanga but use many of the same elements: ujjayi breathing, the ashtanga style sun salutations and the idea of a flow between poses with vinyasa.

Yin Yoga
Long holds in supported poses characterize this style.

Kundalini Yoga
A unique blend of chanting, meditation, breath of fire and other pranayams, along with asana sequences designed for specific results.

  •  Kundalini Yoga with Chloe Beard  Sunday afternoons 2:30-4 pm. This is an all levels class. Kundalini yoga is an invigorating masala of chanting, mudra, chakra meditation, asana work and pranayama unlike any other style of hatha yoga practice. A dynamic practice intended to awaken your dormant energies (kundalini) and ready to start a new week with a meditative focus.
  • Yin Yoga at Yoga Bhoga!   Yin practice involves long holds in a variety of supported poses (mostly floor work) and is an effective remedy for the overly tight and constricted connective tissue that is a result of the aging process as well as too much active work in sports or ashtanga style yoga practice. With Teresa Bergen Mondays 3:30-5 pm and Yvonne Novick Wednesdays 3:30-5 pm.
  • Classical Hatha in the Mornings with Heather Rice  Heather teaches in a gentle and methodical style yet her classes always have students coming out raving about getting a terrific balanced workout. All levels welcome -- start anytime. Join Heather Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10-11:30 am. Heather also teaches our Friday 3:30-5 pm Vinyasa class.
  • Yoga for Back Care on Saturday Mornings  Yvonne Novick teaches this great class every Saturday 10-11:30 am. This is a gentle, well rounded hatha yoga class -- great as an introduction to the practice or for those wanting a class at a moderate pace. Yvonne does modified versions of many standard poses with a focus on awareness and body mechanics. Join the class anytime.
  • Noon Hatha Tuesdays and Thursdays  Kate Sanderson teaches a terrific mixed levels class every Tuesday  Noon to 1:15 pm. Teresa Bergen teaches a fun class at noon on Thursdays. Join us for a great mid-day break and start your afternoon refreshed. It's always an interesting selection of poses and noon classses are a wonderful way to sneak your practice in mid-day and make the afternoon more alive and productive.
  • $10 Drop in Yoga Classes for Students and Seniors.     Yoga Bhoga is now offering a $10 drop-in rate for full time students (with ID) and Seniors (over 65) at all classes. See you in class!
