ASHTANGA
YOGA can be
learned in
Portland in many ways.
If you're new
to yoga in general, start with our Hatha Yoga level 1 classes
to learn some basic poses and breathwork.
There aren't really any
"ashtanga poses." The system is a traditional practice using
hatha yoga poses in a specific sequential order along with
along with unique techniques of breathwork, visual focus
and internal energy control (the bandhas).
Our Vinyasa and Power Yoga classes
offer students of all levels a chance to practice all of the poses of Ashtanga
First and Second Series in an accessible manner.
In these mixed level classes
newcomers (always welcome) get to see the next few steps along
the progression of their own practice while doing modified
versions of the poses where necessary.

- Ashtanga/Power Yoga with
Denise Payne
Every Monday and Friday
at 5:30 pm. Join Denise for an
exploration of the poses from the First through Fourth Series of
the Ashtanga system as taught by Pattabhi Jois of
Mysore, India. Each week it's a different mix
including sun salutations, standing poses, arm balances, inversions and fun.
These classes explore poses from the advanced series of the Ashtanga system
in an approachable manner. Learn the vinyasas, breathwork and bandhas
introduced to the west with the Ashtanga style of practice.
Denise welcomes fit beginners to these classes. Come have fun
with the practice -- we start with what you can do now and let the
practice unfold gradually.
Newcomers are encouraged to work on
preparatory phases of the harder poses while more experienced
yogis can focus on increased precision and alignment in the poses
under Denise's guidance. Class Location: One Song
Here's Denise in Ashtavakrasana from
the Ashtanga Third Series practice:
- Easier Ashtanga based
Classes
Learn the system
at a more moderate pace
in our Vinyasa classes where we talk more about
alignment, skip the series poses that some of us should put off
for awhile and generally proceed at a more relaxed pace than in
the Power Yoga classes.
We offer nearly 20 vinyasa classes a week with a variety of inspiring teachers.
These classes are great for both newcomers to the system as well
as experienced ashtangis desiring a more moderately paced class than
Denise's Power Yoga classes. The focus
is on mastering the details and preparing you for a deeper
practice.
A vinyasa is simply a linking sequence coordinated with the
breath that gets you from one pose to another. This gives a "flow"
and continuity to the practice that is unique to the Vinyasa and
Power Yoga styles derived
from the Ashtanga system. The vinyasa offers a
means of building upper body strength, a counter-pose to re-set the
body and continuity of meditative focus. Warning: It's addictive.
