ASHTANGA
YOGA in
Portland comes in all varieties. Easier classes
(on the Yoga Bhoga schedule as "explore ashtanga" ) offer a way
of learning the system at a moderate
pace.
Full first and second series classes
offer experienced students a chance to do the full practice while
newcomers (always welcome) get to see the next few steps along
the progression of their own practice while doing modified
versions of the poses or just sitting and breathing.

- Weekend First Series Led Ashtanga with
Marie Pearson. Every Saturday at 4:30 pm. If you
can't make it during the week, join Marie on Saturdays for an
exploration of the First Series as taught by Pattabhi Jois of
Mysore, India. This is the full practice of about 70 poses
including sun salutations, standing poses, the First Series floor
work and finishing poses including headstand and shoulderstand
cycles. Marie welcomes beginners to these classes. Come have fun
with the practice -- we start with what you can do now and let the
practice unfold gradually. Newcomers are encouraged to work on
preparatory phases of the harder poses while more experienced
yogis can focus on increased precision and alignment in the poses
under Marie's guidance.
- Easier Ashtanga
Classes. Learn the system
at a more moderate pace
in these "Explore Ashtanga" classes where we talk more about
alignment, skip the series poses that some of us should put off
for awhile and generally proceed at a more relaxed pace. The focus
is on mastering the details rather than rushing through a full
series. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 pm with Heather Beckett.
These classes are great for both newcomers to the system as well
as experienced ashtangis desiring a more moderately paced class.

- Tuesday and Thursday Night
Ashtanga with Marie Pearson. These
7:30 pm classes are the full First Series of the Ashtanga system
-- also known as the Primary Series. Ashtanga emphasizes deep
controlled breathing (ujjayi pranayama), energetic locks (the
bandhas), focused gaze (drishti) and flowing between poses
(vinyasa). All levels are welcome. First Series has a mix of easy
and quite challenging adventures. These are led classes so we talk
you through all of the poses and offer modifications and easier
versions of the more advanced work. Come do what you can and work
into the practice more deeply over time. Newcomers are always
welcome.

- Sunday 1st Series Ashtanga practice
with Linda Ruggerio.
Join Linda
Sunday afternoons
at 4:30 for a traditional Ashtanga practice. Follow Linda in this or
do your own self-paced practice with the group.
